Un incendie s’est déclaré, jeudi 16 juillet, dans un orphelinat situé dans la commune de Mohammadia, dans la banlieue d’Alger, faisant au moins 11 morts et 19 blessés, selon un bilan provisoire communiqué par la Protection civile algérienne.
D’après l’agence de presse algérienne APS, les équipes de la Protection civile poursuivent leurs opérations pour maîtriser le feu qui s’est déclaré au sein de l’établissement de protection de l’enfance. Les circonstances de l’incendie demeurent, à ce stade, inconnues.
Les secours ont pris en charge 19 blessés, dont dix souffrant de brûlures de gravité variable, deux victimes présentant des difficultés respiratoires et sept personnes en état de choc psychologique. Cinq personnes en situation de handicap ont également été évacuées vers un lieu sûr.
La télévision publique algérienne a diffusé des images du Premier ministre, Seïfi Ghrieb, en visite à l’hôpital des grands brûlés de Zéralda, où sont pris en charge les blessés.
Depuis l’Allemagne, où il effectue une visite officielle, le président algérien Abdelmadjid Tebboune a exprimé sa profonde tristesse à la suite de ce drame. Dans un message de condoléances relayé par l’Agence de presse algérienne (APS), il a déploré le décès d’enfants et les blessures subies par d’autres pensionnaires de cet établissement d’accueil de l’enfance, adressant ses sincères condoléances aux familles des victimes et souhaitant un prompt rétablissement aux blessés.
Ce drame survient alors que l’Algérie est confrontée depuis plusieurs jours à une intense vague de chaleur. Selon les autorités, près d’un millier d’incendies ont été enregistrés à travers le pays au cours de la dernière semaine.
