Le football africain est sous le choc. La presse sud-africaine a annoncé, ce samedi, la mort du milieu de terrain des Bafana Bafana Jayden Adams, à l’âge de 25 ans. Le joueur des Mamelodi Sundowns venait tout juste de disputer la Coupe du monde 2026 avec l’Afrique du Sud.
Selon les médias locaux, Adams aurait été retrouvé mort dans un hôtel du Cap. Brendine Johnson, présenté comme son mentor, a confirmé le décès au média Soccer Laduma, précisant que personne ne s’y attendait et que la nouvelle restait encore très douloureuse à ce stade, la famille souhaitant pour l’instant ne pas être contactée. La cause exacte du décès n’a pas encore été révélée.
Formé au Stellenbosch FC, Jayden Adams avait rejoint les Mamelodi Sundowns en janvier 2025, où il s’était rapidement imposé comme titulaire indiscutable, jouant un rôle clé dans le sacre du club en Ligue des Champions de la CAF en mai dernier. International sud-africain depuis novembre 2023, il comptait 9 sélections et un but avec les Bafana Bafana, et avait participé aux trois matchs de la phase de groupes de la Coupe du monde 2026, avec notamment deux titularisations lors du match d’ouverture face au Mexique et du nul contre la Tchéquie, avant de rester sur le banc lors du huitième de finale perdu face au Canada.
Sollicité, le club des Mamelodi Sundowns n’a pour l’instant ni confirmé ni démenti l’information, demandant que la famille soit respectée durant cette période difficile. Une disparition brutale qui plonge tout le football sud-africain dans la consternation, à peine quelques semaines après les exploits collectifs de la sélection lors du Mondial.
